Run a French village bakery in 1900.

Knead the dough, load the oven, take the batch out at the golden moment, and watch the neighbours queue at the door. Golden bread sells for twice the price. An empty window sends customers home disappointed.

A bakery that grows

  • Hire apprentices, enlarge the oven, advertise in the Petit Journal.
  • Eight recipes, from the baguette and the croissant to the rum baba and the Saint-Honoré.
  • Hire an oven hand to run the oven for you, then give him an hourglass so he takes it out golden.

Regulars with their own tastes

  • The priest, the countess, old Fauvel, the mayor, the English tourist… each has a favourite.
  • They place special orders against the clock: “48 golden rum babas for the Bastille Day banquet.”
  • Deliver five orders and they repay you for good.

Hand it down

  • When the time comes, pass the bakery on to your apprentice with your family secrets, and start again stronger.
  • 32 goals to reach, each one adding a little to every sale.

Illustrated with public-domain engravings from the Larousse, the Encyclopédie and 1890s schoolbooks, and a photograph of a Paris bakery by Eugène Atget.

FINALLY!

The Trough remains the biggest bottleneck.

I notice that if you level up marketing to the same level, the special orders become impossible to fulfill. It doesn't matter how much a special order needs, you only need to fulfill them. (even if they ask for multiple million of a certain type of pastry).

This game becomes an RNG idler as you wait for the right kinds of special orders to come in so you can respond.

No pausing, but you can tab to another website while you wait for the background clicker to churn out the portion of cakes without disappointing your customer.

Hey bro, thanks, this was really useful. You found a real bug: special orders were sized on the oven, not on how much dough you can actually make, so with a big oven they became impossible. They're now based on what your bakery really produces, with a proper deadline. It's live now.

The trough is still the main limit late in a run. That's partly on purpose (it's usually a good moment to hand the bakery down), but I'm keeping an eye on it. Let me knom if you think we could fix more than this !

Ah, I see!
If I might make one small further request:

Could you make it so that the important patrons a player has unlocked in one generation playthrough; their odds of appearing are increased until that patron has been satisfied for as many times as the generation that player has unlocked (whence the odds return back to normal random selection probability)?

Say for example, you're playing on Generation 4 and you've appeased The Mayor only twice so far... that would mean you'd have 2 extra possible selections of mayor for when the 'Special Order' event occurs.

In such a way, a player is enticed to play more generations to get greater chance for the lagging patrons to appear. Mrs. Roux has appeared numerous times in a row wanting millions of orders for yet another Christening of her puce-infested family. I suspect in the process of pushing the Countess out of the way. Like, Mrs Roux is very important! Her son is the reason why I can double my trough output... but I need those other unlocks to 'finish' the game.

Great idea, it's in! Regulars you haven't served enough yet (compared to your generation) now come back more often, the ones you've already won over show up less, and nobody orders twice in a row anymore. So Mrs Roux should finally leave some room for the Countess. Let me know if the orders feel fairer now or not !

Hate AI but love the theme

It's fun! I like the looks, and the progression is a little interesting. Could do with some old timey French music!

Apprentices are the real wall here

Thanks for all the feedback! The apprentices are cheaper now and double their output more often (every 25 after 50), and you got your old-timey French music: a little musette waltz. I'm actually looking for some free use playlists to have more than one song, if you have any suggestion... Let me know how it feels now.

I went back to check - it's perfect now! I managed to complete it at last. I don't have any suggestions for music, it's not a type of music I know anything about - same as with French bakeries!
